Methodology

We used Spotify’s own tool, The Playlist Miner, to create a playlist which featured the most popular Christmas songs according to Spotify playlists. The playlist scanned through current matching playlists for the word “Christmas” and compiled a list of 100 songs which featured the most across each of the playlists which matched. We excluded any duplicate tracks and instrumental tracks to compile a list of 50.

We collected the lyrics for each song using Genius and Lyric Find, and input the lyrics into WordArt, a tool which visualises words and creates word clouds using the most popular words within the text you input. We did this to find the most common words used across all of the songs together, to identify the most popular festive words.

The word list included: Angel, Baby, Bell, Christmas, Cold, Frosty, Gifts, God, Happy, Holiday, Holly, Jingle, Jolly, Joy, King, Kiss, Love, Merry, Mistletoe, Presents, Reindeer, Rudolph, Saint Nick, Santa, Snow, Time, Tree, Wish, Year, Yule.

From there, we then analysed the lyrics of each song noting the count for each of the festive words. The higher the number of festive words used, the higher the overall score for that song. Where an artist has been included in the list multiple times, we added up their scores. The ranking table displays the artist's name, the title of the song, the most-used Christmas word within the song and the overall festive word score based on the total number of festive words used.
