How my Dribbble profile got me a job

Dribbble Profile

First of all, allow me to introduce myself. My name is Will Barron, I'm a designer from Sheffield and I'm the newest member of the Evoluted team.

As the title suggests, I didn't join Evoluted through traditional methods. My work got spotted on Dribbble by Ash, who had been searching the site for designers under the term "Sheffield".  Ash then approached me after looking at my full portfolio on my website. I visited the Evoluted offices for an informal interview and now here I am writing this blog post.

What is Dribbble and how do I join?

Dribbble is basically a show and tell for creatives. Designers can share "shots" (small screenshots of the designs they are working on), which other users can "like" or comment on to give feedback. Dribbble is also a great source for inspiration, users can follow their favourite designers and "like" their favourite shots.

Anyone can join Dribbble as a spectator, allowing them to follow designers and like shots. However in order to upload your work, you must receive an invite (this helps to maintain a good level of design work). Existing members are allocated invites periodically, they can then invite new designers who's work they like.

Users wishing to get invited can sign up as a prospect, but they should have an online portfolio or work examples ready to share. If they manage to impress a member with invites to spare, then they have every chance of getting drafted.

Setting up a profile

Once you have received an invite you can start sharing your work. You can upload 400px by 300px shots of your work which will get added to your profile page. It's also important to add your location, website link, twitter username and a bit about yourself.

You can upgrade your profile to a pro account. This does cost $19, but gives you access to additional features such as projects, stats and attachments. Projects allow you to organise shots that share a common theme, the stats provide useful information about your shots and followers, whilst attachments can be added to shots so you can share psd files, zip files or larger images.

I originally joined Dribbble just to share some work examples with the design community and draw inspiration from other designers around the world. However, having a Dribbble profile has proved to have been of great benefit to my career. As a web designer, it's key to have a good online presence. It's important to have your own online portfolio, twitter account and now a profile on Dribbble. You never know who might be looking at your work or when a great new career opportunity might present itself.

Nice post mate, I grew up not far from Sheffield but now live in Sydney, Australia. Dribbble will come in handy when it comes to showcasing the business and designers that we have at our Sydney studio.

@Gavin - It certainly can be a great showcase and as Nik has mentioned, it can be a good source for new work opportunities.

Hi, thanks for the comment.

If you are looking to post your work, you'll need to get an invite from another user. It's best to sign up as a prospect so others can see you are looking to get drafted.

Good luck

Will

Hi Yasir,

I'm afraid I don't have any invites to give out at the moment. If I ever do have any going spare I'll let people know via twitter.

Thanks

Will

Hi Jampa,

Once you have received an invite and you have your account set up, the upload process is easy. Its as simple as selecting your file to upload and adding a description & tags.

Hope that helps

Will

hi jampa, its maybe because you are still not invited or "drafted", anyone can sign up, but you need to be invited or drafted so you can post your works, its like, youre a spectator at first with no way to upload,
